Skyfire, a niche software development company specializing in mobile web browser and mobile video, is going to be bought by its much larger competitor. Skyfire reports that around 20 million users have its web browser installed, a number dwarfed by Opera’s 300 million userbase.

But Opera isn’t buying Skyfire for their web browser. No, the deal (which is estimated to be worth around $ 155 million) is so Opera can get their hands on the development team and the mobile video technology. While Skyfire has been giving away their web browser they have also been licensing their video compression technology and customized versions of the web browser. Skyfire’s Rocket Optimizer compression tech is capable of reducing the size of video by up to 60%. Skyfire currently counts three large U.S. mobile operators as customers for its Rocket Optimizer and Skyfire Horizon solutions, and is in trials with ten other operators around the world.

Skyfire was founded in 2007 and had raised href=”http://redirectingat.com?id=7550X664516&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.crunchbase.com%2Fcompany%2Fskyfire&sref=rss”>$ 40 million in funding.
